the thing with Yagyuu is that he and Niou aren't identical, but they frequently mirror one another. where Niou becomes Yagyuu to show a more serious, refined side of himself, Yagyuu becomes Niou to release a wilder, more capricious side.
↑ you can almost say that they complete one another, in a way. (the cheesiest, I know, but—)
Yagyuu is, beneath the surface, unpredictable, dangerous, and dangerously repressed. being Niou allows him to express that side of himself, to ease the pressure of his own public face. that is, Niou's public face is Yagyuu's hidden self.
Niou is constantly changing because he doesn't like who he is. he tries on other faces and doesn't like them any better, because they don't fit. but Yagyuu's face fits some of what Niou wants to be: serious, dangerous, refined, clever, respectable.
more importantly than that, Yagyuu looks at Niou and sees that who Niou is is this person who can be anything he wants to be, anyone he wants to be. he sees Niou's potential.
being able to switch so convincingly means that they know one another very well, inside and out.
Yagyuu sees all of the small things, too: that Niou loves kittens and likes to dance, that numbers make him happy, that he eats the weirdest fucking things (and not for the shock value). and he likes him, anyway, or maybe he likes him because. as far as Yagyuu can tell, Niou's afraid of his own reflection for no good reason.
and when Niou is Yagyuu, he sees these things, too.
Niou comes from a fairly wealthy family; both of his parents are accomplished con artists, and much of their money comes back to their three kids. his father's favourite is a good investment scam; his mother's a fan of the long con. (Niou speculates that she may be a black widow, but there's no proof of that.)
his father grew up in a tiny rural town in the south; his name is Naoki and he's legitimately sweet. he looks out for Number One, mostly, but he seriously loves his kids. (his wife, too, but that's complicated.)
his mother was from a different small town further north; her name is Emi and she's actually kind of a bitch. she expects a lot from her children and her husband, and comes down pretty hard on them when they don't deliver. she's especially hard on Naoki himself, and on Masaharu, who takes after his father.
Takeru is younger than Masaharu, soon to be entering his first year of middle school (as Masaharu enters high school). he's tech-savvy, a white hat hacker, roleplays online as a female thief. he keeps to himself and tries to avoid his brother most of the time. actually, he basically tries to avoid everyone most of the time.
Satomi is older than Masaharu, just out of a four-year college and in a serious relationship with a budding romance novelist (Yukihiko), whom Masaharu refers to as her 'girlfriend' or her 'lesbian boyfriend.' she looks after her brothers, since their parents aren't around much.
there's a woman in Masaharu's life, and she is glorious. her name is Sudoku; she's a long-haired Japanese Bobtail. she has exactly one orange patch, one black patch, one blue eye and one green eye, and she is Masaharu's heart and soul. seriously, he loves that cat way too much.
his bedroom is a crossroads for Weird Shit. the posters on the wall range from obscure indie films to obscenely nerdy things ('wanted dead or alive: Schrodinger's cat'). the shelves and desk are inundated with Rubik's cubes of all shapes and sizes. his cat's play tower takes up as much room as any of his own furniture.
he can solve a standard Rubik's cube blindfolded, one-handed, or in under twenty seconds, but not all three at once. he cheats at cards almost consistently, but prides himself on being able to win at poker legit. he's a stellar card counter and fantastic at sleight of hand. he's also graduated from the School of the Seven Bells.
when he was iiiiitty bitty, he did ballet, then jazz dance. these days, he does neither, unless he thinks no one's watching. also when he was small, he had a silver tabby kitten named Chess.
he can play one thing on the piano, and that thing is Korobeiniki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2lO4QNMrDY), the Type A Tetris theme.
his favourite treats are brownies with walnuts and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
... okay seriously guys I could go on forever. /)(\
