oh look I've been in this fandom for two weeks it's time for a wall of text

sexuality headcanons after the jump

I was thinking a lot earlier today about my headcanons re: sexuality (initially in relation to ships, but upon closer inspection, I found they don't correlate, necessarily). needless to say, this is all personal opinion, with or without respect to canon.

Scott is hetero, but remarkably open, both in mind and experience. he's actually very, very secure in his sexuality, very comfortable with being the object of a man's interest (so long as they understand and respect the fact that the interest isn't returned). it wouldn't be hard to convince him to try being with a guy, and while he wouldn't be completely repulsed by it, it certainly wouldn't be a game-changer. he'd probably come away from it going, 'okay, that was cool. let's not do that again.' he'd have trouble grasping the idea of people outside the gender binary, but he's very much a 'live and let live' type, and with a little patience, he'd come to accept the concept. (he would have already accepted the individual - it's the complexities of the gender spectrum that would be hard for him.)

Stiles, on the other hand, is bi. he doesn't quite realize it yet, but he's beginning to, and it won't be long before he recognizes it. he's clever that way. his interests are pretty evenly split with regards to gender; he connects equally well with both, if more easily with boys (largely thanks to similar life experiences, etc.). non-binary genders wouldn't faze him much at all, and in fact, he'd ultimately embrace them. he's an internet kid, so it's not a new concept to him in any way, and he's into all kinds of parts and all kinds of minds. it's a non-issue.

Allison is straight, after an experimental and largely rebellious brush with lesbianism in eighth grade or so. she didn't enjoy it as much as she wanted to, but she's comfortable enough with the idea that she could be coerced when drunk. much like Scott, she would fumble with non-binary genders, but she'd learn more quickly.

Lydia is straight and a bit more rigid about it. she's half-afraid that if she tried anything with a girl, she'd wind up enjoying it, and how much of a hassle would that be? she prefers to keep things hetero, but she doesn't mind what anyone else wants to do - as long as the lesbians keep their hands to themselves. non-binary genders are nothing new to her, but she'd have trouble adjusting to a partner with a non-binary biological sex, or a female-bodied male partner. (strangely, I think a male-bodied female partner wouldn't be such a problem.)

Jackson is bisexual with a leaning toward women, and he's pretty sure of his sexuality, but he doesn't broadcast. if someone called him out on it, he probably wouldn't deny it, either - he'd get belligerent, more likely. when it comes to non-binary genders, however, he's considerably more narrowminded. he assumes that a transwoman is just a guy who likes to crossdress (which is queer as hell, but fine by him all the same), and a transman is just a really butch lesbian (which is also fine, as long as she doesn't punch him; lesbians hit hard), and non-binary parts are 'weird.' it's largely ignorance, without any malice, really, but it's very hard to convince him that he's wrong.

Danny is gay, which came to him in a moment of thirteen-year-old revelation when he walked in on his older sister's best friend changing. he hasn't had a doubt since. non-binary genders were assimilated pretty quickly into his life when he started exploring the 'gay scene,' and by now, he's met enough genderqueer people to not even consider it unusual. he'd be perfectly comfortable with a non-binary partner, but a pre-op transman might present some problems in their sex life - something he'd willingly work around, but trouble all the same.

Derek is hetero, but not rigidly so. his Kinsey score is in the neighbourhood of a one; it would take an exceptional man to catch his eye, and most likely, if he wound up with a man, the romantic attraction would come before the sexual. he's sort of peripherally aware of non-binary genders, but doesn't understand them fully - if he fell in love with someone who was genderqueer, he'd absolutely change that, but until then, it's classified as Shit That Doesn't Concern Derek Hale.

Isaac is eternally bicurious. he knows he's into women, and he thinks he could be into men, but he's probably a two or so, and won't or doesn't commit to being bisexual. non-binary genders are a total mystery to him, but he'd be open to the idea, and could adjust fairly easily to having a genderqueer partner.

Erica is bicurious, but would sooner call herself a 'party lesbian.' she's primarily interested in men, but has no qualms about fooling around with girls, if it suits her. (it doesn't usually, but she likes to keep her avenues open.) she's similar to Jackson in her ignorance of non-binary genders, but she'd be much more easily educated on the subject, especially if it was someone she cared about. non-binary biological sex would give her considerable pause, however.

Boyd is straight and comfortably so; he's never particularly considered being with men, and probably couldn't be talked into it, either. non-binary genders would be a new one on him, and while he wouldn't take issue with it and would be easily introduced to the notion, it would take some time for him to get comfortable with a non-binary partner. if he was serious enough about them, though, he could get over it.

and then there were the shippy thoughts that led me here in the first place. since my first watchthrough (I've seen both seasons twice now) a lot of my shipping preferences have changed. when I first watched, I liked Derek/Stiles more than I do now, and wasn't much of a fan of Stiles/Lydia. I also tolerated Scott/Allison much better my first watching.

so anyway, these are my primary ships for each character, I guess?

I prefer Scott with Derek or Isaac, in defiance of my own headcanon. tbph, I don't like the kid enough to think really hard about any of his ships.

I prefer Stiles with Lydia, but Erica and Danny both come in a close second.

I prefer Allison with Derek, but Jackson is a close second.

I prefer Lydia with Stiles or Jackson, oh god, please don't make me choose please

I prefer Jackson with Derek, but Lydia is a close second.

I prefer Danny with Derek (ARE WE SEEING A PATTERN HERE), but Stiles is a close second.

I prefer Derek with Jackson or Allison; the jury's out on an Actual Favourite. (it's worth noting that I also enjoy him with Danny, Scott, Stiles, Isaac and Erica.)

I prefer Isaac with Erica, and I prefer Erica with Isaac, which I guess makes them my Legitimate OTP for this fandom? huh.

I prefer Boyd with Allison, but I haven't really given Boyd ships enough thought to have a whole lot of preference. it'd be more accurate to say that I think they'd be neat.
